Multiplatform MMOs Part 4

I don't really expect this section to be very big. Networking isn't really an issue when it comes to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, they both have their own subscription services that are high speed and fairly stable.

The one area I could see a problem is with the Xbox 360 already charging a subscription to Xbox Live so that would mean paying that subscription plus the subscription of the MMO which is a lot of money if you don't have it. This isn't so much a problem for the Playstation since it is free to access the Playstation Network.

Technologically there isn't much that a PC can do that the consoles can't when it comes to networking.

Check back soon for the conclusion to this epic 5 parter.

  1. That isn't true about the Xbox Live subscription.

All you need for internet access and the online store is the silver Xbox Live sub. This sub is free and all that is required to play a game that operates on it's own servers, like in an MMO such as STO.

The Gold sub (usually $70ish per year) is a fee to keep up the MS servers and support for their games. This sub is totally unrelated to any MMO play.

PS. I actually think it's possible that MS wants a cut of the sub fees from CO/STO. That would make a lot of sense to why Cryptic a console release is in doubt at this moment.

  2. The only example we have right now is FFXI which you're right, you don't need an Xbox Live Gold account for but that isn't to say that other MMO's might be different, for example what you said about MS wanting a cut from CO/STO, Cryptic would be smart to keep it on PC if thats whats causing the problem
